taking out the engine

I did a tune-up recently and still need to tighten down my heads. I have heard from a few people that I need to tighten all the bolts/nuts. And in order to do this I need to take my engine out. Also heard it was very easy. Could someone shed some light on this procedure and maybe tell me other things to look at and adjust while the engine is out. The only tools I have is a good hydro-jack and some wrenches and stuff. Do i need to purchase an engine stand for my jack?

thanx in advance

check out www.type2.com and click on the "Library" link. There's good instructions in there on how to do it. Or get copy of the Idiot Guide, Haynes manual, or the Bentley manual for your bus (better yet, get all three!!).

I've got a 69 Westy I've had the engine out of numerous times. It is very simple, the engine practically drops out. Basically:

Remove the rear bumper (6 bolts)
Remove the rear apron (4 bolts)
Disconnect fuel lines, heater cables, throttle cables.
Mark and then disconnect the wires to the coil, generator, etc.
Support the tranny with a jack or block of wood.
Put a floor jack under the engine.
Remove the bolts that hold the rear cross member to the frame.
Remove the four engine to transmission bolts.
Jack the engine up slightly and pull it straight back.
Done!! Of course, installation is the opposite of removal.

I can do it on my 69 in about 20-30 minutes. It takes longer to put it back in due to aligning everything (tranny input shaft, rear crossmember bolts, etc.).

Check on type2.com for a better guide, but the steps above are pretty much what needs to go on.

It is usually not necessary to remove the engine to retorque heads. Most commonly only the bottom row of studs need be done. This is because they ride in hot oil while the top row is dry. It`s at least worth a try. Just pull the rocker assembly and retorque the bottom row and readjust the valves on reassembly. Should work if not you were going to pull anyway right? Bob Ingman

I find it simpler to pull the engine & tranny as a unit . many folks crack the engine case by improperly installing the engine .
Once you have the engine on the ground , tourque all the nuts you can reach , including the big 17MM ones down the center right side of the engine - this will tighten & align the main bearing saddles and reduce vibration , improve oil pressure , make it run cooler etc. it really makes a difference . then retourque the heads and finally re adjust the valves .
