has anyone put a type1 into a type4 ? i'm talking about a 73 westy i just got.

main reason- i don't want my 14 year old trying to fix a type4 on the side of the road when i have several type1 engines on hand. i'm looking at this in a supply and demand manner.
i alsowant to use the type4 in my 62 ragtop later on.

Bob without question this is quite doable even though the guys on type 4 forum advise against it. I`ll make no attempt to judge but to steer you to the information you request.Go to http://www.type2.com/ it`s in the archives there. The only suggestion that I would personally like to make would be to match the gearing to the transplanted engine. Try to find a donor transaxle (or at least a ring and pinion) from an early bay bus. I did the swap on my son's 74 Sportmobile camper. Had to fab a rear motor support but if you found one from a early bay it could be made to work with less trouble than I had. I got the filler tin from Creative Car Craft in Fla. They repo it in fiberglass and it works great. I did not change the trans and his works great. It is his only transportation and sees a lot of miles per month.

Sorry to get off topic but Alan, do you have any pictures of your son's Bus? I have a '73 Sportmobile, and I have never seen another one around.

Sorry, I do not have any pictures. I will see if he does. It has a large lift up top. It goes straight up not hinged at one end like the Westy. The interior is a mix of westy and sportmobile thet he did using parts from both. Not using a full camper interior.

I think mine is all sportsmobile interior, but I don't know for sure, I only have the two bunks, a table, a closet/storage cabinet rear facing seat with toilet under it, and it used to have a cabinet by the sliding door but it was falling apart and was in the way so it's in the basement now.
