I have a 78 bus w/tIV in it. I am trying to get it to start (it sat up for a few years)put a good battery in it (i think) and when i turn the key there is a "sproing" sound from under the dash upon turning the key on and then another "sproing" going to the off position but no starter sound or turnover..where should i start checking from here? I am getting enough power because the flashers are turning and off and dash lights are working (the ones that havent been taken out)...any super volks techy with some good info i=on where to start would be great
thanks alot

Derf, here`s what I do in a situation like this. I go right to the source then you know something and can backtrack from there. Here`s what I mean. When you have so many unknowns as in the case of making a car run when someone else has had it by pass all that ignition switch and wiring confusion. If you dom`t have one make up a starter button. You need about 6ft. of wire. One heavy and one light. Tape them together and attach a large alligator clip to the heavy one and a push on fitting (1/4") to the small
one. Now on the other end attach a starer button (all auto patrs stores have them). Now another wire with a large clip on one end and a push on at the other. You follow me so far?
With the double wire go to the starter and put the clip on the big hot terminal. Pull the little steak wire off the solenoid and push on your little wire with the push fitting. OK now you`ve got a direct flow of current to the starter but no spark. Use the second wires big clip on the hot side of the battery and the other end goes on the hot side of the coil. You`re now hot wired with direct voltage to the starter. Push the buttom with one hand and work the throttle with the other. I`ll bet it will start. If not at least it will be a lot easier to trouble shoot with ste switch and wires bypassed.
Save that wire setup. You`ll be using it as long as you have the car. It`s a lot easier to do a compression test if you are`tn trying to sit in the drivers seat and crank the engine. A lot easier to rotate the distributor from the engine compartment while cranking too. Keep us posted. Bob

Derf, I see from your post on type 4 forum that you are still confused.Get it started then decide on carbs or not. If you did as I instructed with the starter button you should know something. That was the purpose. To eliminate the confusion and isolate the prob. If you have a hot battery and run a button to the starter and nothing happens then you know damn well the starter is faulty. Thats why you went directly to the starter , to find out.R&R the starter.
In my other post to you about converting to carbs I forgot to tell you that I first had to put on a new starter to get it going. Then the F.I. problems became apparent. But first I had to get is going to make that assesment. Carbs are not going to solve anything if you can`t make it run first. You`ll still be scratching your head after installing them if you do`nt get it to crank over first. Hang in there. This is not so big a deal. You just have to approach it in a systematic way. Isolate your problems as you go. Good Luck. Bob
