I see a few post close to this but not quite... I have a '82 engine going into a baja... After some real close looking I figured I'd use the stock exhaust, before the muffler, it doesn't looke too restrictve(?) and I could hook up some heat... The cam I'm not sure I want to change yet either, so it'll be stock... The question with the price of a dual card setup being more than I want to pay, ouch!!! Should I try to find an intake with a single progressive carb, or go back to the yard where the engine and trans came from and get the airflow sensor, computer, and build a harness for it...
thanks...

I take it you've got a 2.0L type 4 engine from an 82 Vanogon.
You really need either dual carbs or the FI system, the single progressive carb isn't going to do it with this size of engine. Even VW went to dual carbs in the Vans before FI was introduced in the Type 2's.
You could look at the dual solex setup from the early buses, but you are probably buying a nasty headache in the form of worn out carbs.
Stock 2.0L engine with stock FI produces 70hp, but Ray Greenwood seems to be a guru on tuning these things, look for his posts in the Fuel Injection threads

No matter how you look at it the dual carb setup is the best for your application. You can get by with a single progressive but if you decide to go upright at some point then it`s money wasted as you will need the duals anyway. Just keep checking the various VW classifieds and you`ll find some you can afford. I see good used sets all the time for $350.Remember you can check the 914 boards for this item and I`ve seen plenty there.I dont think you want to go EFI on a Baja though. Too nasty.Good Luck. Bob

Thanks... You know... I work around cars all day and have traced down some really weird problems due to water and didn't think of that... DOE!!!

MzQ. I agree with Bob on this one. FI would run great, but finding a way to keep all of the connections clean...even with perfect seals, would be very difficult, unless you custom fab some sort of extra covering system. The location for the ECU will have to be within whatever harness length was supplied and the ECU is not water-proof. The throttle valve switch is not water proof either. These would be your main problems. I realize that open air installs, also affect carb linkages as well, but they can always be washed and lubed. I think you would have some long term problems with your wiring no matter whose system you used. This is not un-do-able...it will just take some serious thought as to seal performance and a few other details, and may be more maintenance than you desire. FI systems that get wet a lot are a constant adjustment headache , because the water and resulting corrosion on the terminal changes the mixture supplied. Ray
