reverse/back up lights

Post by 62T2Doood »

Has anyone here tried to install reverse lights into the engine bay door?

I don't want to chop holes into the body to install them, but I have no issues w/ cutting into the engine bay door.

anyone here done this? Thanx

Dood, I have small units mounted on the rear bumper of my 70 camper. Good luck. Bob

thanx again for your input Bob. That's a really good spot too I think. Although a new bumper may be more expensive than a new engine bay door. what do you think.

My goal w/ this bus is to restore it w/ reversible personal customizations while maintaining the original structuring.

Then, when I get a "walk through" panel sometime in the future, I can switch out the customizations for original components.

Dood, I`m not real sure but I think that mine are stock VW. At least they appear to be. They really do`nt look add on. A double door panel huh? Now you`re talkin. Heres what ive always dreamed of.
A split panel with the roof of a 23 window. That would be a canvas pull back sun roof and lots of those little roof windows. And to really make it look good I would want the deluxe belt (aluminum trim that v`s in front)
with complimentary colored beading installed. And to get the most use from it I would like a complete Westy interior.
You`re never too old to dream I guess. Good Luck. Bob

Dood, yah I just saw a photo of the same backup lights on a VW Thing so I`m sure now they are VW. Look in the local boneyards. You can wire them off the tranny or off a toggle whatever turns you on. Good Luck. Bob

Yeah I've pulled a set out of a 71 in the local bone yard. Now I just need to figure out where I want to install them on the bus.

There is a guy selling a set over on VWvortex. Here is the thread.

I would mount these on the bumper rather than the engine lid. Maybe where the over-rider tubing connects to the uprights? Build a custom bracket??

any driving light will do as l;ong as they please your looks.i have an original"MARSHALL" driving light on mine and when i get on gear i can see where i'm going.i mount it on the bumper ,i don't want any rust on the body specially on the engine lid or compartment.as you know ,the "MARSHALL" brand is hard to get,yes ,the ones with the little fox on the glass.go and buy any square type, the smallers you can ang have fun.
ps;hook them to the tranny switch.
