Anyone familiar with technique needed to change starter bushing in 78 transporter? Does the engine have to be dropped?
Lets hear it Nate.Spill the beans.
Is it a standard deal for a starter to be warrantied only if installed with a new bushing?
Good Luck. Bob

bob,
i haven't done the procedure, but i looked it up in one of my manuals, and you DO NOT have to remove the trans or motor to do it, but you DO need a special tool to pull out the bushing. i can scan and email the manual page if you want me to so you can see what the puller looks like - or look it up if you can get a copy of the bentley book. you might be able to make a puller of some sort - however, the photo in the bentley doesn't give you a whole lot of a clue as to what the business end of the puller looks like. at least you know that, in theory
, the motor doesn't need to drop to fix it...
good luck, scott

Thanks Scott, that`s good to know. In earlier models the bushing is pressed in from the engine side of the transaxle. Does it look as if one might simply collapse the old bushing in order to extract it?
Call your local supplier to enquire if a starter is warranted without the installation of a new bushing. That does not seem right to me. Perhaps I`m behind times but I`ve never heard of that before. Thanks Scott and Good Luck. Bob

i suppose you could collapse the bushing or carefully dremmel it out. i haven't had the starter out of my van lately, so i'm only guessing. the procedure i have is for '72 onwards, btw. i've never heard of such a guarantee - who is the supplier?

scott,
the supplier is dura last, an autozone supplier. Bob is asking becuase i had a tag on my starter (the wrong one by the way)stating that the new bushing needed to be put in or the warranty"MAY" be void! the blasted silinoid is too tall, keeps hitting the body so now i have to buy one online..any suggestions?

Hi Bob ; the bushing has to be _very_ worn out to cause starter failure - I'd prolly lie and say " of COURSE I changed it !" I'm not familiar with the later (post '71) typ II's sorry to say - I wonder if you can't just pop in an auto -stick (self-supported) starter and cal it a day - that's what we do when faced with a cracked bell housing .
The bushing can be withdrawn from either side but it's dicy to get it out with motor installed . you cannot collapse it , you'll just destroy your tranny trying . I have seen some folks get two new bushings and find a bolt that barely screws into it , use that to pull the old bushing out , YMMV . you cannot use a threaded device to install the new bushing .

i like busboys.com and busdepot.com for online bus stuff. bus depot has better (slightly) prices. busboys have better guys on the phone. aircooled.net is very good, but no-one on the phone, only email. motorworks.com is fine in a pinch, but you have to make sure of what you are getting, since they seem to sell a lot of lower quality (brasil, elsewhere) items. the good thing is they (rmmw) almost always can tell you where things are made.
i also shop on ebay for everything before going to online retailers. i have gotten some incredible deals on ebay, for example a set of new german bosch fuel injectors for 120.00. these are almost 100.00 EACH at any retailer. i got a NIB bosch voltage regulator new for less than 15 bucks. i got a new original german master cylinder for 39.00 - these sell for about 140.00 at busboys. it goes on and on. you have to look very carefully and cross-check your part numbers meticulously, and email sellers to make sure items are what they seem to be, but ebay is a great source. so i look on ebay for anything i need before i look anywhere else, if only for price comparison purposes. if you are in a hurry for stuff, ebay is useless, though.
all the best,

just take the starter out and you will need a special tool to remove the bushing.i made mine with a piece off bent wire that i flattened to pull it out.it should come ouit easy and if not is easy to break since it is an alloy of bronze and cooper.just take your time and be carefull.use towers to hold the bus just for peace of mind.good luck
