If with a little cutting and welding if a set of stainless steel 914 heat exchangers will fit on a '73 bus? I see sets of them on e-bay all the time for $50-100 which is a lot better then trying ot find a nice set of bus ones, looking at pictures of them I'm sure they would probably be too long but a with a little help from a cutting torch would take care of that. any thoughts?

thumper,

i have wondered the same thing.

i believe that with welding they could be made to work more as j-pipes than as a heating device. what i mean is that the exhaust posts should bolt up fine, but there is no match (from 914 to bus) between the inlets to the heater control box.

if you don't want/need heat, i think that with some modification they will make great set of j-pipes.

i have also wondered if the bursch mufflers for 914's will fit our busses.

Yeah,
I think with some work with some flexable exhaust pipe I could get them to hook up to the heater controls, I haven't had heat since I got the thing anyways so I don't really care, the only other thing I was worried about is which way does the engine face in a 914? would the posts be facing the right way? or could you swap them from right to left and vice/versa, I guess I should just buy the next set I see and be a guinia pig.

Thump, a while back Bleyseng(Geoff) over on type 4 forum had a Bursch header set he was willing to give me. I declined because I was uncertain as to whether or not I could fit it onto a van. Check with him he probably still has it. Bursch is a very good set.
Good Luck. Bob

I had wondered about 914 exhaust used for a bus too, I had a 73 914 and now have a 73 bus, and I'm looking for a complete Type IV engine for it. I don't think the 914 exhaust will work. The engine sits the opposite way in the middle of a 914, with the fan forward, and the exhaust runs from the heads all the way back past the transmission to the rear of the car. Switched around and used in a bus, they would run from the heads, under the fan, and way out past the rear bumper.
Are J-Pipes available for Type IV buses? I saw a set on eBay once, but the seller had them custom-built at a muffler shop.

Well why not fit it on so the tail pipe exits at the front of the rear wheel?
The jpipes should be a simple cut an shut if you just want to use them alone.
