I have a 73 transaxle, engine and a late model donor bus.My son would like to install this drivetrain in his 69' camper.Has anyone done this? Been searching but have'nt seen too much info on this conversion.
The shift housing on the 73' transaxle studs look longer than the 69.
Should the studs or housing be replaced so that I can use the 69 front transmission mount?
The rear hanger assembly on the later bus looks too large to mount on the 69. Should just the hinges on the frame be cut, the bolt-on transmission center mount be removed leaving all the upper hanger junk behind?
And finally should the engine bar be modified to mount to the existing 69' engine
hanger or is it better to remove it then drill and install the later mounts?

greg,
try posting over on the type4um - more traffic there. i know there will be some fabrication required, but i have not done this conversion so i can't say exactly what. i believe you will use the type 4 bearer bar and modify it. this can't be that much different than putting a type 4 in a bug, and there are lots on the type4um who have done THAT. does the 69 body have any provision for the upper trans mounts on the bellhousing? i don't think it does. on type 4 vehicles, these mounts carry most of the weight. the trans linkage is another story. there might be some info on type2.com in the library section.
also, if you have any questions about the upright cooling conversion, which you probably already know about, there is lots of experience over on the type4um.

Thanks Scott I'll try posting there. I've searched the internet on this subject & can't seem to find any info. Seen plenty of type1, type3 and early type2 info but nothing on 68-71. Maybe the installation is so obvious that nobody feels the need to comment on it, or maybe its not! Thanks.

This conversion is not so difficult and would be a big improvement in the drivability of the car. You would go about it by getting the Oregon Performance upright shroud kit to upright the engine. You can leave the trans in it and use the 1800 Bus flywheel with a bushing pressed in . The rear carrier has to be fabbed then it goes right in and will last a loong time if cared for in a normal way. Good luck. Bob
