Jake: your \"Camper Special\"

Post by Derek May »

Hi Jake, figured I'd post my question here rather than emailing you, so everyone can benefit from the answer.

Visiting your site, saw some details on your "Camper Special" 1971 engine, and had some questions for ya, I've spoken with you on the phone about an engine, and since I've not the funds to buy, it gives me the luxury of a lot of time to decide what exactly I want to do, ha ha.

So, here goes some questions on the Camper special specs. Obviously, anything is possible, but it gets into question on price. I recall that the price on the camper special was quite nice, but I won't mention it here given that its not posted on your site:

cw cranks or stock?
dynamic balanced?
headwork?
Exhaust?
'Redline' RPM?
Have you had the chance to dyno this thing, if so, how did it rate?
Where's the powerband, if I can call it that. Stock seems to pull from idle, but loose its guts at about 3400 rpm on a hill (unless you are in 4th in which case it just fags into 3rd at 3400 rpm -- which is about 40 miles an hour when I want to do at least 55.

You mentioned that it works with stock FI or with carbs. I picked up a set of Del 40's, no manifolds or linkage yet, just a nice pair of used Del 40s to be reconditioned. Would that give more power than stock FI on this setup?

Do you do these as a kit? I noticed the powerstroke isn't in your kit list and assumed there is good reason for that, you mentioned the difficulty in ensuring proper clearancing when we dicussed that engine, but I don't see that would be a problem with the camper special.

If you do the kit, I'll bug you privately in an email for a 'guestimate' price so I can work on budget, I may want to send you my dells for reconditioning and venturi/jet setup for the engine. Final price would be worked out of course at time of specifying an order.
