2.0L Bus Engine Automatic vs Standard

Post by Travis »

Is there a difference in the engine between an engine originally coming from an automatic vs one from a standard?

I have what I believe to be an engine from an auto-equipped bus going into a standard, aside from some longer bolts, is there a difference?

travis,

i have to admit that i am not 100% on this, but i AM 98%...

there should be no difference to the "longblock" part of the engine, from the crank back, shall we say. depending on the year, there will be fuel system differences and such, but internally, no difference. i have seen that there were quite a few cam grinds for the van engine, perhaps auto engines used slightly different cams than standard trans, though this is merely speculation on my part.

If you are using the stock injection, there will be a differnt part # of injector on some models...for the automatic...but the standard injectors can be substituted in complete sets. There are minor wiring differnces in the FI most notably in the decleration valve and EGR set up. The vacume system has a couple more connections at the center manifold on the Auto...but can be worked around...and the throttle body has minor variences. You will probably have an un-used vacume connection when going form auto to standard. Ray

As Scott said no internal differences. The cam dissimilarities occur between hydraulic and solid lifter models. Good Luck. Bob

You did not say what year and I don't know for sure on the busses, but type-3 autos use a slightly different case. There is a notch in the lower right case 1/2 so that you can access the bolts holding the converter to the flexplate. I suspect the type-4s and busses are the same.
