I was given a 81 van, I cannot figure out the vacuum lines, this motor has parts that look like they bolt somewhere but is lying on top of the motor attached to the harness. I rebuilt the engine, new fuel injector seals, resoldered ECU, runs great cant idle down and cant figure out vacuum lines to save my life without spending bucks on a Bentley book, was given a Haynes and a Vans for idiots, have done bugs 24 years have no Van data at all
thanks
I will email a picture of engine to anyone that can help

Dang! somebody Flocked you up!
The part labled "what is this"...is the auxiliary air regulator (choke actually) it is plumbed into the EGR vacume unit (pancake) on its right side in the picture...and what appears to be the brake booster line on the left....thats wrong. That regulator should go one side to the intake manifold in the rt. back corner..and one to the intake boot in between the air cleaner and center manifold. Let me check the book with the pictures tonight....and get you a list...if someone does not beat me to it . Ray

yup,
no wonder it won't idle. you'll have no power brakes, either...ray's right, this is all messed up. just about everything is in the wrong place. i am not at home, so i can't photoshop on your picture, if ray doesn't come through before tomorrow evening, i can draw a picture for you at home tomorrow and put it all right. it is easy, and it looks like you have all the bits.
meanwhile, try doing some research on your own:

(scroll down to bottom fuel injection section)

(scans of bosch manual has flowcharts and pictures)

Scott...you may have to help...I'm getting hung up at work....and its looking ugly. I have the vacume routing on my desk...but...You know how it might be. Yep...it should be pretty simple. It does look like someone had fun putting it back together though....probably with the thought that vacume is vacume...or its just summa dat 'missions crap....Ray

Well glad to hear at least the parts are there, I sent the picture to the gu I got it from , He said looks like it was when he got it, Engine sounds great at 2500-3000 RPM, maybe should race it haha. If you guys can help that would be great, will also check out the links too. I have always done my own work and have computerized engine analyzer and a ton of Mitchell manuals, but not that one. No rush on anything I greatly appreciate the help.

Generally, in 411/412 at least, that vacume port is "T"d into the throttle positioner diaphram on one end and into the transmission modulator valve on the other when an automatic transmission is used. Both of those parts are for auto's only. It is very possible that if your bus never had an auto, that someone simply put an automatic version center manifold in. In some models, it may also have been used for a vacume source for the EGR...but I'm not sure of that. Ray

rich,
are you talking about the vac port on the intake plenum, between the large outlets that connect to the intake runners?
if yes, then this needs to be fixed. this is vac port for the fuel pressure regulator. it should also tee into the the vac inlet for the decel valve. the decel valve is bolted to the firewall, at the top left of your original photo. tthe two large hoses are plumbed correctly (if a bit "hackily") in your photo. the small inlet will tee to a line with the fuel pressure regulator. the size of these lines is difficult, they are all metric and hard to match with standard parts. you need the right sizes of hose, but for now just make do. VW dealers may have some of what you need, busboys also have them all, and they might have a decent picture of the systrem all together, too. www.bus-boys.com.
why don't you put everything together the best you can, and upload it the way you did before & post the link, and i can look at the photo.
make sure about the brake booster line. this was really messed up in your photo, going ito the aux air regulator, and the line for the regulator was going directly into the intake elbow. this was the main reason for your high idle.
