I just bought a '73 bus with a type IV in it. I noticed when I bought it that there is a pipe sticking up from the top of the engine that has been cut and sealed. there is also one on the muffler in a similar condition. I guess this is evidence of a disabled EGR system. I want to get it working but how? am I just supposed to run some new pipe in between the two that have been cut?
Next question, there are two wires coming off my alternator one of which goes to the voltage regulator. I don't know where the other one is supposed to go. I wired it to the starter because it reaches so perfectly and there is a perfectly located hole for it in the sheet metal. Upon doing this I get an alternator warning light. This did not happen before I removed the motor. If you've actually taken the time to read this post all the way through I thank you.

Why? If I am interpreting it right you are actually talking about the air recirculation system and the thing is a nightmare.

\'73 EGR and alternator question
The EGR valve will act as a slight vacuum leak when the engine is cruising down the highway. I have seen them screw up idle rpm because they get clogged up with exhaust.
If your state doesnt worry about it I suggest making sure it doesnt leak at idle and forget about it, as for the wire I cant help you there I have a plug and one wire for the idiot light. I would leave the wire unhooked and make sure the ALT. is charging the battery and just tape it off.
check ALT with lights and fans on to make sure it can handle the current draw
good luck

\'73 EGR and alternator question
The sealed up pipe could be for the EGR or the air pump that pumped air into the heads
Does your motor have a Vee belt driving the air pump?
on your alternator wiring
(+)the large diameter wire goes to the starter(#30)
a smaller wire from the same + on alternator goes to the test plug(#14) you don't need it
and
Three wires to the voltage regulator in a plug
--- the blue wire from regulator goes to the charging idiot light---it switches on the alternator with the key
the alternator and regulator need a good ground

\'73 EGR and alternator question
thanks for the help.
I left the alt. wire on the starter. I've decided to leave the egr system disabled.
I have'nt started it since the last time I posted because I had to re-rebuild my carbs because my friend offered to do it and he did a very poor job. ( If you want somthing done right...) Also, I went to adjust my valves and noticed that one of the rocker arm mounting bolts on the #3 was very badly stripped. back to the junk yard.
