Who offers good rebuild for a '78 volkswagon bus (van). Is there any 'performance' rebuilds offered. (just a bit more power, for those hills)

Is there any other engines that are easy to fit in.

I am having my '79 2.0L motor rebuilt right now from a company called AVP (www.avp-worldwide.com). I know a couple other people that have used them recently too. I should get my engine back next week and then probably have the bus running a week or so from then by the time I getting everything back together again. I don't have any personal experience with them yet, but soon will.

stay away from AVP, GEX, and all other mail order companies. All you will get from them is garbage! I'd say it's better to find some place local that does good work and offers a warranty. That way you don't have to deal with shipping the engine back when you have a problem.

For performance, contact Jake Raby! He's the best when it comes to reliable type 4's.

I agree with Uncle John.

You get what you pay for! I see some shops slapping together used crap and selling it cheap but it will not last.

I am building a stock 1600 for a buddy and this motor will be over $800 in just quality machine work and new parts. That is with darn near free labor from me (he got me a parts washer which I needed)! I spend more time preping the cylinders than most cheap shops do on an entire engine.

Then again my engines run cooler and will last longer than the el cheepos too Image

Jake Raby, definately will build the best engine, and you can go for performance. He has 3 engines suitable for buses. Review his website, and drool. Now for the hard part .. it ain't cheap.

When it comes to stock rebuilds, I've seen reputable posters recommend Boston Bob, and he's not too far from you. He may be a good option.

I don't think he build performance engines. He's also not cheap.

Comes to this ... a good type 4 engine rebuild isn't cheap.

You're looking at $2000 to $5000 USD depending on how much performance you want.

Stay away from AVP? Unless something has happened recently, they do top notch work. They know what they are doing when it comes to Type IV. Talk to Leonard or his wife @ AVP if you have any questions. I would venture to say that they are the Type IV authorities in Northern Ca. If anyone has information to dispute this please feel free to share because I would be interested if I was missing something.

Got to secont the vote for Boston Bob for stock. He is always looking at ways to improve things, and really takes the time to make things right. I run a 2 liter form him in my 81 vanagon and it is the best 2liter I have ever ran......Oil temp never above 115C in 90+F heat outside, great oil pressure 20+ lbs at idle, and excellent CHT (under 350F always)
