Rider on points wearing out
I have a 71 bus, totally stock. Recently, I noticed after long trips that the engine was running rough/would not idle. I checked the dwell and noticed it was considerably higher than the 50 deg I'd originally set it at. A little more checking and I found that the rider on the points has worn down. I replaced the points, lubed the dist. shaft lobes and 300 miles later, the same thing has happened. What's going on? There are no rough spots on the distr lobes. I've been using this dist. for about 6-10 years. Have the bearing worn out? Anyone else had this problem?

Rider on points wearing out
hello,
I Have heard that Bosch quit making the quality points with a fibre type runner and only make ones with plastic runners, I had problems with them wearing down , breaking off and even had teh points themselves break , I got sick of buying them so I just installed electronic ignition and havent had a problem since.
sorry i can be more help.

Could you have a worn shaft ? maybe that would cause the premature wear.Check to see if there is any play in the dist. shaft.Just a thought.could be the plastic vs. the fiber as previously stated. good luck

What are you using to lube the cam? As Bryan pointed out some points' rubbing blocks are softer than others, and will wear rapidly if run with insufficient lube. Some lubricants can actually turn abrasive if they get too hot, you should be using a lube made specifically for the purpose (harder and harder to find as points become less common). Bosch & Mopar both make it, I'm sure there are others. Points can be a hassle compared to an electronic pickup, but at least they aren't as likely to leave you dead in the water - a spare pair from the glovebox can be put in on the side of the road and you're rolling again in 2 minutes unstead of waiting for AAA.
