Ghia Shifter Blues

I'm upgrading my '63 ghia vert to a new transaxel, etc.. The previous (and original) owner mangled (chiselled open) an area on the tunnel directly below the shifter on the drivers side. As part of the process of removing the old transaxel, I removed the inspection cover under the rear seat and found a nylon Bushing and Clip rolling around. I also can not locate a Shift Rod Guide beneath/above/near the Shifter.
My questions:
Is the Shift Rod Guide a welded in piece or do I place it and secure it with the 15mm shifter bolts? Do I need to remove the selector shaft as part of the process? Do I slide it forward enough (removing the cover between the front end beams) and slide the new hardware onto the shaft?
A procedure and schematic as well as any insight will be much appreciated
Thanks. John
