bumpers

My ghia has black bumpers - guess someone tried to paint them - or is this stock??? Can I remove the paint and if so, will they shine up well?

Sounds like one of the special stealth Ghias.

But seriously, stock bumpers were all chrome, AFAIK. You might try some aircraft paint stripper.

Most likely your bumpers' chrome was beyonmd it and the p.o. decided to paint them instead. You'll probably find no chrome under the paint. Ghia bumpers are not reproduced and good ones are expensive. A lot of people color-code them. I was actually today thinking about painting mine black as well (they are really not in a good shape, not even good enough to be re-chromed).

Rocky Mountain stll has the glass bumpers, both for $250 - can't chrome
them but if you're color matching anyway (and don't care too much for
actual protection), that'd be an option....

Jacksoncsb may already have fiberglass bumpers - hence the reason they are painted?

Just an idea... otherwise I'd agree with others here and guess they're too far gone to simply strip and shine, or they wouldn't have been painted in the first place.

Hi,

I have wondered why no repro bumpers have been available for Ghia... Over here a decent used pair of bumpers cost about 900$...

New chromed US bumpers are now sold on:

http://eisparts.com/Merchant2/merchant. ... ode=GHIANP

375$ each (complete w. all parts, overriders etc.)

If anyone bought them I would love to hear an opinion.

As I don't live in the US the shipment would probably cost more than the bumper so it wont work for me... Hope that someone will import these to Europe!

Wow, that's cheap! I have a few sets of bumpers...but they would need straightening and re-chroming. (and I'm missing some over-rider pieces).
So now I have to decide...

Straighten and Re-Chrome...OR buy Complete...

The money I'd have to spend would be comparable.

I have some bumpers parts I re-chromed. Selling for reasonable prices... I'll have a whole rear bumper available in about 2 weeks.

See some pic's at:

I bought one of the repos. Not too bad. Made in India. Comes with all the hardware ready to put together. When you get close to them you know they're not original, the backside is kinda crude. I would suggest that you paint the inside with a good paint to help prevent rust, and I have doubts about how they'll look in 3-5 years, but they were a quick and easy solution that I'm pleased with. Given the price of straightening and plating the originals, it might be cheaper to use these and just plan on replacing them every few years when the rust and dents start getting out of hand. . (We all know how Ghia bumpers tend to get banged up just sitting in the garage-- it's a mysterious thing).

About EIS bumpers... How bad are they?

Is the parts interchangable with stock bumpers?

I have decent blades, but need the rest (including support arms).

Can I keep my bumper blades and mount only the overriders and bows?

Are the other hardware included, or only the chromed parts?

I'm please with mine. and, yes, they do come with all necessary hardware so they're an easy fit. I think that for a daily driver they will be fine. Seem to be the same weight and all as an original, and I think you could mix and match pieces.

Like I said, they may not last like an original, but when these get dented I won't cry (as much) and for the price you're getting an entire bumper for the price of replating an original.

For me, it gets my car back on the road and buys me time to start finding nice original pieces for if/when I want to go to 100% original.

I bought from eis parts, and not happy with the quality.
Although the chrome look nice and I can fix the inside crude myself, the bumper blades are not straight. They are kind of have bumps all over.
It is hard for me to explain in english. The surface just not smooth.

I'm considering the eis bumpers - would it be possible for someone to post pictures? Torboon if you could post pictures of the bad area, that would be most appreciated.
