Carpet kit help....

Post by wine country ghia »

Hello all,

Well I'm on the final install stages of my TMI carpet kit but have run into a snag I can't figure out where the last four peices of carpet go they don't seem to fit right anywhere? They only look vaugely like the pics in the diagram I'll post pics as soon as I can take a few snaps any help would be much appreciated.

If I remember correctly, you have a vert. If they sent you the kit for the coupe, I think that would eliminate the rear parcel shelf. Did they throw in a trunk kit? :) Post the pics, I and I am sure others have installed the carpet. I am getting ready to install my second kit in the same car.

Also the pictures of the carpet kits lay them out where they go. Its just a matter of thinking 3D

Those extra four may be for the area behind the rear seat. One for each side, one for the floor area and one for the back. If three are for the area behind the rear seat then if you have one that looks sort of like a half circle, that's probably for the rear parcel shelf some call the rear window dash. The pics will tell.

If it isn't too late in your install, now is the time too plan ahead. With the driver side kick board off, and the inside quater panel removed you have good access to the wrie loom. I suggest running a few 16 ga wires from the engine bay to the trunk for adding additional guages or fan for a remote oil cooler. Also run a few from the front to under the back seat and cargo area for future sound or auxillary fans for heat. Also run a heavy 8 ga from the battery (in the engine bay I assume) to under the rear seat. This can be a main power supply for big electrical loads which must be controlled via relay switches from the dash. Change the shift rod bushing before the tunnel carpet is in. (Less chance of getting grease on your new carpet.)

ALWAYS plan ahead! :)

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the good advise yes I have a vert and as fate would have it
I ran into a guy at the store who has a vert and I got to see first hand yep they threw in the rear carpeting the peices I was confused about were for the rear fender wells I'll have pics at my site soon of the installed carpet. It came out pretty good but some peices need allot of triming to fit right and the binding is kind of weak but for the price I'm not complaining yeah I'm with ya plaster master already ran a nice loom to the engine compartment just in case.

My current carpet suffers bad binding, which is why I paln to soon buy a TMI kit. I examined a TMI and was impressed with the quality over mine. What kind of carpet do you have? Is it premium loop or the lower grade. Or is it the felt or pile? The binding problem I have is that the backing on the carpet itself is not strong enough to hold the stitching in the binding.

Hey Ron,

No I bought TMI kit from CIP1 it's the carpet edge I'm talking about the carpet and backing seem pretty good. You will need to cut out the holes for your heater vent outlets and for the shifter and ebrake

So what exactly is the problem with the binding? Mine tears off easily, but it is tearing the carpet. It tears off just on the carpet side of the stitches in the binding. What is your binding made of? There is cloth, vinyl, and yarn.

Thanks

Yeah my binding is made of tight fine looped threads I'll email CIP1 to verify
it's a TMI kit I mean for the money it really pretty good but I think the second kit down the road will be a sewfine kit.

Carpet Kit Help

Post by Gheezer »

I bought a Sew Fine C-Kit for my 70 Vert and so far it has installed quite well. All holes are cut for you accept the floor vents (back/front) for heat. Everthing has lined up well, although, I think most Kits could stand to give you a little more on the rough edges so that you can make adjustments in length if needed. WCG, I was wondering if you glued the tunnel piece top to bottom or did you just do the sides and where it meats the floor?

WCG, That is the yarn binding I am talking about, and TMI does offer that as well as the other types. If you go to aircooled.net and check out the options on their TMI carpet you will see what a thorough distributor (John C.) includes in your order. Alot of places don't ask the specifics of your kit.

Take Care,
