earlier bumpers -> later car

i know this has been covered but my search querys (early bumper; bumper) provided no help.
i have a 72 ghia and i want to mount overrider bumpers. i found a set at a local yard that arn't in too bad a condition. i'm pretty sure the mounting holes in my body are set further apart (at least it appears, i've never gotten a chance to look at the differences with the cars next to each other) but my question deals with modifying a set of mounts that exit my body at the normal location and either mount to the early bumper right there or bending and mounting to the bumper at their correct location.
has anyone done this or had ideas on this? i know i've read that people say "it's not possible" but i don't mind putting some time and effort into this if it meant i could get rid of those huge boxy numbers.
thanks
