Ok I finally got my case and it came with a set of p/c and heads. I dont know exactly what size it is but I have the number of the case..... GE019895 . Does anyone know the stock displacement of this? And since I am new to the T-4 set up, what is the first thing I need to do? I know I want to get rid of the hydraulic lifters, can I put a set of solid lifters in without major work? Any help will be of great gratitude.
Sincerely,
Roc

Rocthe case you have was born (ha ha) as a 2.0L so hopefully you got some 94mm pistons with your deal. To understand the T4 more go to Tuna's Type 4 secret revealed page attached to this forum. or contact Jake. 2 good sources of info.

Roc, you have a 2.0(actually 1971cc) from a '79 Transporter. There are a few things that you need to know about this longblock (I'll assume the pistons/cylinders and the heads are the same vintage).
The first off are the heads. The '79-'83 Type 4s used a different exhaust port shape than the earlier heads. Almost 99% of the conversion exhausts out there will only work on the early heads. Just find a set of earlier heads (from a 1.8 or an earlier 2.0 would be fine), and the exhausts will bolt on with no problems. The VW part number on this head starts with 071-.
The pistons and cylinders should be 94mm if they are the stock ones. If they aren't measure the diameter of the pistons to get the bore size.
As for the lifters, just buy an aftermarket cam with lifters (DON'T MIX MANUFACTURERS ON THESE PARTS), install them with a rebuild and you'd be set to go. There shouldn't be any other changes.
If you have any other questions here, feel free to ask. We have a lot of experienced people that will gladly babble on about Type 4s.
