Is it advisable to use Permatex or Hernatite etc (gasket sealant) on the auto tranny sump gasket when replacing? Recently replaced the ATF / cleaned sump and put is all back together with a "duralite?" thick paper gasket (from www.jpat.co.uk) and it leaks like hell - even without the engine running. I now have a cork gasket on order from Germany, but wondered if I could help seal it better (last cork one had a small leak - only developed after about 8000 miles though).

The best way I have found to do these..wether cork or paper....is the same way I do my valve cover gaskets. You need something high temperature and good in oily situations. The permatex ultra series works fabulous for this. This would be ultra copper, ultra black or ultra gray. You need to clean the pan well...then apply the silicone in a very thin even spread on the pan and pan side of the gasket ONLY. Like 1/32" thick max. Let it get sort of tacky...20 minutes maybe. Then carefully apply the gasket to the pan...and use dowels or bolts to align the holes. As it gets tackier....gently push teh gasket into better contact with the pan working yourway around..making sure its aligned right.
Then lay the pan...gasket down....on newspaper....making sure the bolt holes stay aligned. Put something like about a kilo of weight on top....and leave it for the night.
In the morning...you need only oil the tranny side of the cork gasket...then bolt it up.
This takes maybe 2-3 ft lbs of torque. Use a 1/4" rachet gripped at the head....and no more...or it squishes teh gasket aside.
Adhering it to the pan...gives it rigidity to not be squeezed out from between pan and tranny while you tighten the bolts. Ray

Yeah I had to replace the gasket on my auto trans sump, i rang everywhere and was laughed at by a few transmission shops, just the usual V8 idiots. in the end i made my own. When i installed it I did just as Ray did and have not had any dramas, hope you have the problem sorted mate, Cheers Damien.

tracked down a cork gasket from Germany. Used Hermatite red and put on - torqued to 7 ftlbs repeatedly over a couple of days until no more movement, then filled her up. No leaks so far...

but need it done to go on trip

so i put ultra on BOTH the pan And 1 side of the Gasket?

can i double up on the gaskets with ultra between the two

what about on the side of the trans
JUST oil it up?
