VW 4spd tranny into 914 conversion

Post by Ephry73 »

Has anyone done this conversion? I was wondering, because the prices of rebuilding one of these trannies is getting a little too high. I am considering getting a 914, and am looking at all of the angles.

lots of problems doing this besides the fact that you will have to flip the ring and pinion so you have 4 speeds forward.
the shifting hockey stick will also be a real problem to adapt to!

Its not that expensive to rebuilt a good unit with new synchros, gaskets and seals. Even the bearings are still fairing cheap.

Look for a good used unit as they are out there.

Just checking. I have read a while ago about an autocrossing 914 that had a VW 4 speed tranny in it.

Looking at Ebay, there are a few "good" trannies for not too much.

really? I can't see where it would be first of all strong enough. 901 parts and the various gears available from Porsche and others makes the 5 speed a good choice to AXing or track as long as you are under the 300hp range.

That does sound like a good deal. I do have a 914 flywheel and PP in great condition.

~$250 is the going rate for sideshifters, ~$75-125 for tailshifters.
(Just picked up a tailshifter to gut to fix a sideshifter for $75, 95% of the guts are the same, gears etc.)

Been that way as long as I can recall.

The chances of one being good are probably better than a random T1 tranny... A lot of "bad" 914 trannies were actually borked shift couplers.
Wouldn't surprise me if someone put their kids thru college on that scam someplace.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
